RSIME Finite Element Modeling: LS-DYNA
LS-DYNA is an extremly powerful non-linear, explicit finite element modeling program, utilized by RSI Materials Engineering. Capable of modeling complicated "real-world" problems that other FEA programs have difficulty with. Most notably, is the ability to handle non-linear problems, such as material plastic deformation. Listed below are a few examples of which LS-DYNA can be applied.
- Crashworthness of Vehicles
- Automobiles
- Locomotives / Railcars
- High Velocity Impacts
- Material Plastic Deformation
- Sheet Metal Forming with Springback
- Drop Testing
- Airbag Inflation and Impact
- Human Body Dynamics from Impact
- Solid / Fluid Interactions
- Explosions and Resulting Damage

Hertzian Contact Stress Analysis
Hertzian contact stresses are detremental to the life of a bearing. To better understand these stresses and loads on individual rollers, a LS-DYNA model was created and analyzed of a railcar tapered roller bearing. More...

Railcar Wheel Impact Analysis
Wheel flats are common wheel defects in the rail industry. LS-DYNA was implimented to model a single wheel with a wheel flat travel over track. Resulting deformation and accelerations were measured and compared to physical test data. More...

Grease Seal Stamping Model
A bearing grease seal is made of thin sheet steel stamped into its shape. This process was modeled using LS-DYNA. More...
